The American Historic Site Movementtm

Since 1890 the Historic SiteMovement has enriched the American landscape with over 50,000 historical markers.   While all civilizations have marked places of meaning, the scope of America's 20th century commitment to capture the history of place is unprecedented in human history.  In modern times the U.S. has the honor of having the highest density of marked historic places per square mile among all nations.   What makes the AHSM a true movement of the people is that it has blossomed independently from hundreds of public and private sources without any centralized direction.  Other characteristics of the American Historic Site Movement:

  • Topics ranging from natural phenomenon to human endeavor.

  • Coverage spanning the birth of the planet to the present day.

  • Written by hundreds of authors with backgrounds from academia to Americana.

  • Made of over twenty million pounds of metal, wood and stone.

  • Dotting over one million square miles of American landscape.

  • The world's longest running and largest public history project.

Attesting to the continuous strength of the movement, more than twenty new historical markers are unveiled in America every week. Written in a concise, often terse style due to space limitations, markers rely on the reader to ponder them and to imagine what there is no room to say.
